Itinerary for a Full-Day Nairobi Safari Adventure; NNP, Giraffe Center and Bomas of Kenya

6:30 AM: Hotel Pick-Up

Your exciting day begins early with a 6:30 AM pick-up from your hotel in Nairobi. Your guide will arrive in a comfortable 4×4 Jeep, perfect for navigating the rugged terrains of Nairobi National Park and offering great visibility for wildlife viewing. After a brief introduction to the day’s activities, you’ll set off towards the park.

7:00 AM – 10:30 AM: Nairobi National Park Safari

You’ll arrive at Nairobi National Park by 7:00 AM, just in time for the early morning hours when wildlife is most active. Nairobi National Park, the only wildlife sanctuary within a capital city worldwide, covers a vast area of 117 square kilometers, blending open savannahs with rolling hills, rivers, and acacia woodlands. The perfect time to start your game drive.

Route and Landscapes
  • Entering through the Main Gate (Langata Road), your Jeep will take you through the open grass plains, dotted with majestic acacia trees and scrubby bushes. The wide, sweeping savannah provides breathtaking views of Nairobi’s skyline, making for a dramatic backdrop against the wildlife you’ll encounter.
  • As you drive deeper into the park, you’ll pass Leopard Cliff, an elevated point offering panoramic views of the park and a prime lookout for spotting the elusive leopard. To the south, the Jeep will traverse towards the Hyena Dam, a key waterhole that attracts a variety of animals, including hippos, buffalos, and a multitude of bird species.
  • Continuing east, you’ll reach the Ivory Burning Site, an important conservation landmark where Kenya made its first public stance against poaching. Your guide will briefly pause here to explain the significance of this site in Kenya’s conservation history.
Wildlife Viewing
  • As you journey through the open plains, you’ll have a great chance to spot herds of zebras, giraffes, and buffalos grazing in the early morning light. In the southern section, the denser woodlands and rocky outcrops are prime lion territory, and with a bit of luck, you may see a pride of lions stalking prey or resting after a night hunt.
  • Keep an eye out for rhinos near the Rhino Sanctuary, where both black and white rhinos are often spotted. The park is also home to the elusive cheetah, and your guide will expertly navigate towards areas where these sleek predators are occasionally seen hunting.
  • As you near the park’s southern border, the Jeep will take you close to the Mbagathi River, which forms a natural boundary between the park and the adjacent plains. The river attracts a variety of herbivores, including eland, gazelles, and impalas, making it a great spot for predator sightings as well.
Return Drive
  • As you make your way back, the terrain gradually opens up again into expansive grassy plains, where you might catch a final glimpse of wildebeests or ostriches wandering through the landscape. By now, the rising heat of the day will send many animals seeking shade, giving you a moment to reflect on the incredible wildlife encounters.
  • The game drive ends around 10:30 AM as you exit the park and make your way to the next destination.

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM: Giraffe Center

After your exhilarating morning in the wild, the next stop is the Giraffe Center, located about 30 minutes from Nairobi National Park. Here, you’ll encounter the rare and endangered Rothschild giraffes, known for their light-colored patches and long, graceful necks. 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch at Utamaduni Craft Center

After your visit to the Giraffe Center, you’ll head to Utamaduni, a charming venue that combines a delicious lunch experience with local artisan shopping. You’ll have an hour to enjoy a relaxing meal of traditional Kenyan dishes or international cuisine, all while surrounded by African art and handmade crafts available for purchase.

  • Menu options include dishes like grilled meats, vegetable stews, and fresh salads. Enjoy your meal on the terrace while overlooking the lush greenery that surrounds Utamaduni.
  • After lunch, take a few minutes to explore the craft shops, where you can find everything from handcrafted jewelry to traditional textiles and sculptures.

2:30 PM – 4:00 PM: Bomas of Kenya

The final stop of the day is Bomas of Kenya, located a short drive from Utamaduni. Bomas is a living museum that showcases the cultural diversity of Kenya’s numerous ethnic groups through traditional dances, performances, music, and recreations of traditional villages.
