Nairobi National Park Pickup by Hotel & Gate Choice to Use

If you’re based in a residence or hotel in this first city-center cluster of pickup locations, you’ll use the Main Gate along Langata Road, but not every hotel often described as “CBD” is truly inside the CBD. Ngara, Museum Hill, and Milimani-edge properties should be treated separately because their approach roads differ slightly.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, most city-centre pickups should be around 5:10–5:28 AM on weekdays and 5:25–5:40 AM on weekends. Use the earlier end for River Road/Tom Mboya/Ngara locations and the later end for Serena/Norfolk on quieter approaches.

For guests staying in Upper Hill, we recommend using Nairobi National Park Main Gate. Upper Hill is Nairobi’s main business and conference district, located south of the CBD along the Ngong Road corridor, and it gives relatively direct access to the Langata Road side of the park.

The distance from Upper Hill hotels to Main Gate is typically about 12–16 km, depending on the exact hotel location. In light traffic, the transfer usually takes around 18–26 minutes. Early morning departures normally work well, but weekday traffic on Ngong Road and nearby approach roads can build quickly between 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM.

For the smoothest safari start, guests staying in Upper Hill should aim for an early pickup, especially for a morning Nairobi National Park game drive.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, use a 5:15–5:30 AM weekday pickup and 5:30–5:42 AM weekend pickup. Do not group Mombasa Road airport hotels under Upper Hill.

Kilimani, Yaya Centre, Prestige Plaza, Adams Arcade, and the Ngong Road corridor are among the most convenient central Nairobi pickup areas for a short or full-day Nairobi National Park safari. This zone sits southwest of the CBD and connects directly to Nairobi National Park Main Gate, making Main Gate the recommended entry point for NairobiPark.org pickups.

In normal off-peak traffic, the transfer to Main Gate usually takes 14–24 minutes, depending on the exact hotel location. Early morning pickup is best because Ngong Road, Hurlingham, Adams Arcade, and the Langata approach can slow down quickly once weekday traffic builds.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, use a 5:15–5:30 AM weekday pickup and 5:30–5:42 AM weekend pickup.

Kileleshwa, Lavington and Riverside are leafy western suburbs. They remain good pickup areas, but they are not always faster than Kilimani because the route may have to feed back to Ngong Road, James Gichuru Road or Riverside/Chiromo before heading south.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, use a 5:15–5:30 AM weekday pickup for Kileleshwa/Lavington and 5:05–5:25 AM for Riverside/Chiromo-facing properties.

Westlands is a common visitor base but it is not as close to the park as many guests assume. Main Gate is still the normal choice. Early pickups work well, while 7:00–9:30 AM weekday movement can be slow around Chiromo, Waiyaki Way, Lower Kabete Road and Westlands roundabouts.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, use a 5:05–5:25 AM weekday pickup and 5:20–5:35 AM weekend pickup. Avoid describing Gigiri/Village Market hotels as Westlands hotels.

The northern hotel belt is the most time-sensitive pickup zone for a morning Nairobi National Park safari. Parklands and Highridge are closer than Gigiri/Runda, but both require crossing the city to reach Main Gate. Use this zone carefully for 6:00 AM entries.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, use 5:05–5:25 AM from Parklands/Highridge, 4:55–5:15 AM from Gigiri/Runda/Muthaiga, and 4:50–5:10 AM from Windsor/Ridgeways/Thika Road. Afternoon safaris are often logistically easier from Gigiri and Runda.

Karen and Langata remain the easiest hotel zones for Nairobi National Park, Sheldrick, Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum and Kazuri Beads combinations. Main Gate is common, while Mbagathi Gate can be useful for southern Karen or Magadi Road-side pickups when the route plan starts in the southern plains.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, use a 5:35–5:48 AM weekday pickup and 5:42–5:52 AM weekend pickup. The exact gate should be chosen by the guide according to the first wildlife-viewing target.

This belt is very useful for short safaris because it sits near Langata Road, Wilson Airport, the Southern Bypass and the park boundary.

For a 6:00 AM park entry, use 5:30–5:45 AM from Wilson/South C/Tamarind Tree/Boma, and 5:35–5:48 AM from Weston/Langata Road properties.

Airport hotels and transit apartments should normally use East Gate when the safari starts from JKIA, Embakasi or the airport-side Mombasa Road corridor. Syokimau and Mlolongo are not always 10–18 minutes from East Gate; allow more time because the route depends on Mombasa Road, slip roads and the exact estate entrance.

For a 6:00 AM East Gate entry, use 5:32–5:45 AM from true JKIA hotels and 5:20–5:35 AM from Syokimau/Mlolongo/67 Airport Hotel. For international-flight pickups, allow separate immigration, baggage and terminal-exit time.

A few properties do not behave like normal city hotel pickups. Some are on or near the Mbagathi River boundary, some arrange their own game drives, and one formerly inside-park brand has relocated. These should not be written as simple “hotel-to-gate” transfers without context.

Choose Main Gate for most city-facing Nairobi hotels. Main Gate on Langata Road normally fits CBD, Upper Hill, Milimani, Hurlingham, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Riverside, Westlands, Parklands, Wilson Airport, South B and South C pickups.

Choose East Gate for most true airport-side pickups, including JKIA, Embakasi, Fedha, Syokimau, Mlolongo and many airport-side Mombasa Road hotels. For Ole Sereni, Emara Ole Sereni, Eka and Panari, confirm the route first because East Gate or Main Gate may both work depending on the safari plan.

Choose Main Gate for most Wilson Airport, Tamarind Tree Hotel, Carnivore, Langata Road, South C and The Boma pickups. These locations sit naturally on the Langata Road side of Nairobi National Park.
