A morning safari with an elephant nursery visit

NNPT4 combines a private Nairobi National Park game drive with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery. Your driver-guide collects you in Nairobi, leads the safari and takes you to the nursery before its fixed public session. Drop-off follows after noon; allow around 6–7 hours overall, with longer transfers possible from some locations.

Choose this tour if you want wildlife viewing and an elephant conservation visit in one morning. The main trade-off is time in the park: the nursery deadline limits how far your guide can follow sightings. A park-only safari gives more freedom to adjust the drive; the three-stop wildlife tour adds Giraffe Centre and a longer day.

Compare the full group total, then add the separate attraction charges.

The prices below are private safari-service totals in US dollars. They cover your vehicle and driver-guide, morning game drive, fuel, vehicle insurance, driver and vehicle park entry, drinking water and agreed Nairobi pickup/drop-off.

Add guest admission separately: every applicable Nairobi National Park ticket and Sheldrick donation sits outside these totals. Your written quote should itemise the complete amount before payment.

What your quote includes

Included

  • Private pop-up-roof Toyota Land Cruiser for your party.
  • English-speaking driver-guide and Nairobi National Park game drive.
  • Fuel, vehicle insurance and driver/vehicle park entry.
  • Drinking water.
  • Pickup and drop-off at the agreed Nairobi hotel, residence or airport.

Paid separately

  • Personal Nairobi National Park admission: category and date must match each guest.
  • Sheldrick public-visit donation, paid to the Trust.
  • Meals and drinks other than the supplied drinking water.
  • Gratuities, souvenirs and personal expenses.
  • Extra stops or itinerary extensions unless included in your written quote.

Use the park ticket guide and confirm the current KWS amount for your party. We have not bundled an assumed park fee into the service calculator.

Admission age rules

Keep two age systems separate: NNPT4 counts ages 5–17 as children for the safari service; Sheldrick charges its adult donation from age 12. A teenager can therefore have a child service price and an adult nursery donation.

Sheldrick currently lists US$20 for ages 12+ and US$5 under 12; resident amounts are KSh2,000 and KSh500 respectively, with proof. Pay the donation in cash on arrival. Check the Trust’s current visitor guidance.

Your day, with realistic timing

Safari first, Sheldrick second

A transfer buffer protects the part of the day with a fixed entry time.

An early game drive uses the cooler morning before the fixed nursery session. The schedule below reserves transfer time before entry checks rather than treating 11 AM as the arrival target.

Suggested morning timing — estimates, not guaranteed arrivals
Planning timeActivity
6:00 AMPickup; an earlier 5:30 AM start can be requested.
About 6:30–9:30 AMMorning game drive; route adjusted to sightings, road conditions and the nursery transfer.
About 9:30–10:30 AMTransfer and gate allowance toward the nursery.
By 10:30 AMAim to arrive at the nursery access gate for checks.
11:00 AM–noonSheldrick public visit.
After noonReturn to your agreed drop-off; roughly 12:30–1 PM where location and traffic permit.

Morning plan

Your guide balances wildlife stops with the time needed to reach the nursery. A distant sighting may have to be left for another safari if reaching it would threaten the nursery visit. This is a focused morning game drive, not a full-park circuit.

The route starts at your agreed pickup, continues through Nairobi National Park and reaches the nursery via Magadi Road and Mbagathi/Workshop Gate, before returning to your drop-off. Exact kilometres depend on the pickup, park route and exit; request the route plan for your address.

Later start

A nursery-first option may be arranged: pickup early enough for the 10:30 AM gate target, the 11 AM visit, an optional lunch stop and an afternoon game drive. Allow a longer day with an evening return.

Request a separate timing and price confirmation. The morning service tables are not a promise that an extended afternoon itinerary costs the same. Lunch, ticket validity and the afternoon park schedule must be agreed.

Airport & layover

Airport pickup can work when your flights leave enough time for arrival formalities, both visits, road delays and your airline’s required check-in buffer. Send both flight numbers, arrival and departure times, terminals and luggage details.

Do not judge the fit from the tour duration alone. A delayed inbound flight can make the fixed nursery session impractical. Ask us to assess the flight schedule before paying; a park-only trip may fit a shorter stopover.

Two different ways to experience wildlife

Nairobi National Park

Giraffes on open grassland with the Nairobi skyline behind them
Giraffes and the city skyline illustrate Nairobi’s park setting; sightings vary.

The game drive is a search for free-ranging wildlife. Your guide looks for rhinos, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, antelopes and birds, adjusting stops to what is visible. Lions are possible; no species or sighting is guaranteed.

Nairobi National Park has no free-ranging wild elephants. The elephant experience on NNPT4 is the nursery visit. That distinction makes the two stops complementary, and avoids confusing a rescue facility with a wild elephant safari. Sheldrick explains the park and nursery setting.

Sheldrick nursery

A caretaker feeds a young elephant. Visitors observe; feeding is reserved for keepers.

The nursery visit focuses on orphaned elephants in care, with milk feeding, bathing or play and keeper interpretation. The animals attending and their behaviour can vary. It is a public conservation visit, even though your vehicle and guide are private.

Only keepers feed and directly interact with the elephants. Follow the visitor cordon and staff instructions; this tour does not include guest bottle-feeding, rides or private animal encounters.

Confirm the nursery reservation before committing

Choose your date, ask us to check the safari arrangement and secure the official Sheldrick reservation. The vehicle booking alone does not grant nursery entry. Keep the Trust’s confirmation email with your tour documents.

Current nursery rules: advance booking only, within the next three months; no same-day reservations. The public session is closed on 25 December. Official booking instructions.
What if Sheldrick has no space?

Ask for another date, keep a safari-only itinerary or compare another available combo before confirming the booking. No replacement stop is automatic: agree the revised itinerary and price first.

What if we are running late?

Tell the driver-guide immediately. The fixed public session cannot be moved for your party. Traffic or a late pickup may shorten the game drive; it does not create a later nursery entry slot.

Make the morning work for your party

Families & access

Share every child’s age when you enquire. Maximum capacity is seven guests per vehicle, and child restraints, mobility equipment or large luggage may affect the suitable allocation. Request any child seat in advance; availability needs confirmation.

The Land Cruiser has a step up, and the nursery visit involves an outdoor setting and time outside the vehicle. Tell us about walking, standing or transfer assistance needs so we can check the arrangement before payment. A specific accessible vehicle is not assumed.

Wear seat belts while travelling. Use the roof opening only as directed by the guide, and supervise children around the vehicle and nursery cordon.

Weather & photography

Bring a layer for the early start, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Rain can affect track conditions and make the nursery ground muddy. The guide may shorten or change the driving route to preserve the nursery timing.

Carry a charged camera or phone and a power bank. Use a zoom for wildlife and follow staff photography instructions at the nursery. Avoid promising children a particular animal: the game drive depends on wildlife movement.

Payment, cancellation and changes

Standard bookings use a 50% deposit through a secure Pesapal payment link. For last-minute arrangements, particularly within 24 hours, full advance payment is required for the vehicle and guide. Ask for the balance due date and the final written inclusions with your quote.

These are the cancellation bands supplied for NNPT4. Your written terms should identify the amount the percentage applies to and any payment-processing costs before you pay. Separately arranged nursery visits follow the Trust’s own terms.

Rescheduling or changing the party

Contact us before changing tickets or arrival plans. A new date needs both nursery and vehicle availability; a larger party may need another vehicle. Ask for the revised total and any applicable cancellation charge in writing.

Questions before you book

Is this a private tour?

Your Land Cruiser and driver-guide are private to your party. Sheldrick’s 11 AM public viewing is shared with other booked visitors.

What does the advertised US$54 include?

US$54 is the per-adult safari-service price when seven adults travel together, making US$378 total. Smaller parties have different per-person prices. Guest park admission and the nursery donation are extra.

Can we book with children under five?

Yes, under-fives have no NNPT4 safari-service charge under the supplied policy. Include them in the full passenger count and request the appropriate seating. Park and nursery admission use their own rules.

Do we need a park ticket just to visit the nursery?

Yes. The KWS entry requirement also applies to nursery visitors. Your safari service includes driver and vehicle park entry, while your personal ticket is separate. Confirm ticket validity for the agreed route before purchase.

Can we feed the elephants ourselves?

No. Guest feeding and direct interaction are not included. The nursery experience is watching the elephants and learning from their keepers.

Can we add Giraffe Centre after Sheldrick?

Yes, request the NNPT8 three-stop tour and its price. Giraffe Centre is not included in NNPT4.

Do you guarantee rhinos or lions?

No. The game drive takes place in a wild landscape. Your guide will look for suitable viewing opportunities, but cannot guarantee a particular species.

Does sending an enquiry reserve our seats?

No. We check the vehicle, guide and nursery status, then send the quote and payment instructions. Keep the written tour confirmation and the official nursery reservation together.
